Braddy named local GOP chair
Former Gainesville Mayor Ed Braddy is the new chairman of the Alachua County Republican Party, according to a document filed with the supervisor of elections office.
Braddy, who served as mayor from 2013 to 2016, was unanimously selected last week by the party leaders after the position remained vacant for several months. He is the third person to hold the title since the 2018 midterm elections.
Braddy said his goal heading into 2020 is to provide stability for the local party and to identify and develop candidates that can win and hold seats, both locally and statewide.
“My focus is building us into a competitive organization so voters have a choice,” he said.
In 2013, Braddy defeated incumbent Craig Lowe in a runoff election for mayor, gaining nearly 55% of the vote. Controversy, however, clouded much his reelection campaign, and he lost to current Mayor Lauren Poe.
